What is the Model Context Protocol (MCP)

The Model Context Protocol, or MCP, is an open protocol that lets an AI application connect to external tools and information sources through a standard interface.

An MCP client, such as a compatible AI coding agent, connects to an MCP server. The server describes the tools it provides, and the client can call those tools when they are relevant to a request. MCP does not determine what a server can do: each server defines its own capabilities and boundaries.
